When writing weeDECOR, it’s difficult to know when, where, or how nursery decorating inspiration will strike.  Interestingly, this article, as the ballet wall art one a few days ago, was also inspired by memories of my grandmother’s house. 

During our frequent visits to her home years ago, my grandmother kept my sisters and I entertained with my mother’s childhood toys – particularly, her Barbie dolls.  At that time, I remember thinking of Barbie’s clothes as “old” as opposed to the more appropriate term “vintage”.  Memories of what I now view as a seemingly endless trunk of gorgeous evening gowns, beautiful wide-brimmed hats, and cute boy short swim suits made me smile upon finding these limited edition vintage Barbie wall prints from PoshTots.

Eight in total, these signed and numbered wall prints feature Barbie in stylish haute couture outfits that would add elegant vintage decor to any baby girl nursery or girl’s room.  Drawn by designer Robert Best, who you may have seen on Project Runway, choose a bobbed, red-headed vintage Barbie wall print in a blue, French provecale dress gown and long white gloves or a blond Ilona Barbie print in a knee-length white floral dress and matching wide-brimmed hat perfect for attending a tea party.  An especially beautiful Veronica Barbie wall print dressed in a sheek black evening gown lined at the bottom with fur (faux, of course) would also look lovely.

Let’s be honest.  To most of us, black and white nursery décor feels…uncomfortable.  For a lifetime, we have been trained by designers, retailers, and our own families that colors are the most appropriate way to decorate a nursery.  Explaining that black and white nursery décor is great for a gender neutral nursery or noting that babies can only see black and white their first few months anyway will not get you bonus points with your mother-in-law.  When you tell her of your decorating plans, she will likely still look at you funny.  

But, once you get over the odd looks and the initial uncertainty, black and white décor can be an exciting and fulfilling exploration of “color”.

One way to get over the hump is to think about black and white nursery décor as neutral color that can be brought to life with patterns, texture, and design.  For example, romantic toile and damask baby bedding patterns can bring softness to a baby room with a black and white color palette. A white shag rug can bring cozy texture to your nursery.  And, nursery-friendly designs like black and white turtle wall decals, floral wall art, or China doll toile baby bedding can bring character to the room.

Another way is to actually use black and white as a neutralizer for color. In this nursery above, Posh Tots features gorgeous black and white crib bedding against a bright, turquoise-like blue wall.  Achieve a similar look with pale pink (as in this damask bedding set from Doodlefish), pale blue, or other traditional nursery wall paint colors. 

And, if you would like a touch of a black and white nursery theme, consider black and white seating like the Ophelia glider featured above or this stylish black and white child’s seating/storage piece accented with a throw pillow or blanket in the primary color of the rest of your nursery.

There’s a lot of snow out there for some of you making a true DIY at-home project very appealing right now.

Spoonflower, the design-your-own-fabric website, just announced the winners of its children’s fabrics contest and there are some fabulous designs if you are looking for a more customized look for your nursery or kid’s room.  Use these one-of-a-find fabrics for throw pillows or upholstery for your glider, baby quilts for your crib, curtains for the nursery, and more.

We love this darling “You are My Sunshine” nursery-friendly tree and bird fabric by Emily Burger who creates children’s wall prints for nursery decor.  Her dainty blue and pink birds and modern green trees on a white fabric are fresh and fun. This fabric would be beautiful used in a baby’s nursery.

To stick with bird themed décor but with a little more punch to your nursery, Yvonne Herbst’s “Bird on Wire” fabric in bright pink, orange, and green is delightful.  Cute birds look at one another perched on a wire.  Given the feminine-tilt of the color palette, this fabric is probably best used in a girl’s room.

Alex Morgan’s ladybug-patterned children’s fabric called “Spot the Bug” also brings a punch with its red, blue, orange, and purple palette.  Ladybugs are a popular decorative element in today’s nursery and kid’s room decorating and this punchy palette is a nice way to use the ladybug with a modern, decorative flair.  This fabric would work nicely in a girl’s room or a modern girl’s baby nursery.

Finally, we love the regal feeling of this vibrant chocolate brown animal print with blue whales, gold elephants, and green birds.  Great for decorating a boy’s or girl’s room, we love the unique way designer Mary Brewer used flowers for the animals eyes, to add décor to the whales spouting water, and to create ends to the little music notes.  Precious!

These decorative fabrics really are a creative (or snowed in) mom’s dream.

We love Dwell Studio.  We can’t help it.  Their decor aesthetic is so fun, so refreshing.  It is modern, but not so modern that it doesn’t work for your home. 

And, Dwell Studio’s new spring line does it again.  At the top of our list of favorites are this blue and brown owl themed baby bedding and this paper doll themed crib bedding for a baby girl. 

In the owl nursery décor set, we love the signature Dwell Studio color combinations of modern dusty blue, mocha brown, grey, and olive green.  Curious blue owls perch on the branches of modern trees decorate the crib bumper and are accented with contemporary geometric shapes on the 100% cotton fitted sheets.  Classic, yet trendy, your baby will be sleeping next to cute owls in high style.

Their paper doll nursery décor setis equally fresh.  Pale pink, pale blue, mocha brown, beige, and bright pink dolls stand hand-in-hand.  We can envision some very cute wall décor playing off the paper doll motif (stencils, wall decals, hanging wall mobiles, etc.).  We like how each girl has a bit of a different hair style or dress.  Intended or not, the implicit message – no matter our differences in color or in style, we can all get along – is not lost on us.  How nice to bring a baby girl into the world on that note?

We were recently introduced to the charming illustration style of Kim Siebold Studios — perfect for a baby nursery or kid’s room.  From Buffalo, MN, Kim tells us she has been drawing and using her creative energy to keep her artistically busy for 38 years (not counting the additional 2 years to learn how to hold a crayon).  She draws her inspiration from everyday life and has recently begun selling her wall prints on Etsy including these darling zebra, lion, and cow wall prints.

We like the mottled color design elements Kim uses in her wall prints.  Her use of this sponge paint-like techniques form an array colors that bring the soft, childlike feel we crave to her illustrations.

Her “Z is for Zebra” wall print incorporates this element as the mottled colors of pink and white envelop her modern zebra caricature. The zebra is cute, in and of itself, and is punctuated with a modern font-styled Z for a fun interpretation of animals and the alphabet.

Her “Moomy Love” pink, brown, and lavender cow wall print uses that same sponge paint-like style detailed with polka dots.  Perfect for a little girl’s room or nursery, the white-spotted mom and baby cows would add nice detail to a farm animal themed room.

In her “Roar” lion wall print, Kim uses a similar polka dot motif but with more of a pure, illustrated style that lends itself to a sharper look.  “Roar” the lion also comes in super cute “Meow” the cat and “Woof” the dog if you are seeking other animal images.  

Reasonably priced at $17 per wall print, it’s hard not to go wrong with these animal cuties.

Hand painted, personalized furniture and décorative accessories are great ways to add whimsy and personality to your kid’s room.  We happened upon Bret’s Wishes who we think has the right mix of playfulness and style to help bring that touch of fun you may be seeking.  Based in Farmington Hills, MI, Bret’s Wishes specializes in hand painted children’s furniture and accessories and has been in business for more than 20 years.  All their items are hand-painted using child-safe acrylic paints and top coated for greater protection.

A few of our favorites are this gorgeous white girl’s jewelry box with light pink and white flowers and green detailing.  What a perfect little accent for a toddler girl’s room with floral décor or a nature themed room.  Eye-catching it is!

We think this personalized wooden rocking horse would look darling in the corner of a blue baby boy’s room. Use it to add an element of traditionalism to your modern nursery.  Decorated with blue and yellow stars and moons, this wooden rocking horse will be sure to help your little boy drift off to dreamland.

We love stylish, modern design in the nursery.  And, what better place to start your modern nursery decorating project than with a modern crib?  We agonized over picking the five best modern cribs because there are so many great options out there.  And, we cheated a bit and created a runners-up category for a few favorites we just couldn’t leave out.

1) The Stokke Sleepi crib – We love this modern round crib not only for its dare-to-be-different shape, but for its convertibility and portability.  The Stokke Sleepi crib converts from crib to toddler bed and its size and shape makes it easy to move the crib through small doorways and around tightcorners.  The crib is made with environmentally-friendly beechwood for the eco-friendly mom.  The clean design works with contemporary and traditional décor and the round shape softens the hard edges you often see in modern design – perfect for a soft, cozy baby nursery. $1000 at Land of Nod (get a $100 AmEx gift card if you purchase by 2/28/10).

Toddler bed conversion kit is sold separately. $1220 at Fawn & Forest.

3) Nursery Works Studio Crib – Clean, simple, and modern is what you expect from Nursery Works.  How they manage to make a piece of nursery furniture that functions as a crib, changing table, storage drawer, and storage cabinet that can convert into a toddler bed and fold-out desk AND doesn’t look like an eye-sore is the brilliance in their design.  Toddler bed conversion kit is sold separately.  $1780 on Amazon.

4) Muu Kids Modern Crib- We love the shape and style of this modern crib from Muu as well as the option to decorate it with colorful, interchangeable panels.  Made of solid maple, poplar and wood fiber, the modern crib above has a soft green and brown decorative leafpanel – great for a nature themed nursery.  You can choose from blue whales, pink flowers, or blue helicopters. The crib is available in either a natural or walnut base finish (shown here) and you can buy a conversion kit to convert it to a toddler bed.  $1175 at Petit Tresor.  

5) Baby Mod, Roxanne 3-1 Convertible Modern Crib – If the brilliance in Nursery Works is smart, modern design, the brilliance of WalMart  is smart, modern pricing with pretty good modern design to boot.  Walmart’s Baby Mod Roxanne crib is made of New Zealand pine wood construction and comes with a drawer and two storage compartments.  It’s also convertible to a toddler bed (kit sold separately).  For modern design and modern price, you can’t beat this. $199 at Walmart.

And our runners-up…

Sorelle City Lights Commuter Crib – Because it is so eco-friendly and nicely priced.  $406 at Babyearth.
Oeuf Crib – Because it’s Oeuf.  $890 at Rosenberry Rooms.
Spot on Echo Crib – Because of the “wow” affect.  Gorgeous design.  Gorgeous price. $595 at Design Public.
